Artist's Description

The Mdina Ruse

Two-and-a-half long months into the Siege, the Turks suffered a humiliating defeat, primarily due to a surprise attack on their camp at Marsa. A small but highly effective cavalry of Knights from Mdina lead the attack. It fooled the Turks into believing that a large relief force had arrived from Sicily and they retreated in panic.

Mustapha Pasha�s anger and frustration on learning that a mere handful of men had robbed him of what earlier had seemed a likely victory, compelled him to avenge this embarrassment. The next morning, Wednesday, August 8, a large contingent of Turkish troops headed to Mdina, to take the fortress and destroy the cavalry.

According to scouting reports the old walled city was poorly defended, so the Turks presumed it would fall without much trouble. They were so confident of victory, they did not bring along a single siege cannon.
