Description
The Mdina Ruse
Two-and-a-half long months into the Siege, the Turks suffered a humiliating defeat, primarily due to a surprise attack on their camp at Marsa. A small but highly effective cavalry of Knights from Mdina lead the attack. It fooled the Turks into believing that a large relief force had arrived from Sicily and they retreated in panic.
Mustapha Pashas anger and frustration on learning that a mere handful of men had robbed him of what earlier had seemed a likely victory, compelled him to avenge this embarrassment. The next morning, Wednesday, August 8, a large contingent of Turkish troops headed to Mdina, to take the fortress and destroy the cavalry.
According to scouting reports the old walled city was poorly defended, so the Turks presumed it would fall without much trouble. They were so confident of victory, they did not bring along a single siege cannon.
The Turkish troops began the long climb toward the hilltop city, but as soon as the Mdina defenders saw them approaching, they opened fire with a great fury. The troops halted in shock and disbelief. More than just the amount of firepower, they were stunned by the huge number of defenders visible on the city walls. Disheartened, the already demoralized troops were soon ordered to call off the attack and return to camp.
But the Turks had been deceived yet again.
More than half of the soldiers parading on the walls were Maltese women and children dressed up in military uniforms.
