Description
Suleiman the Magnificent
In October 1564, sixty-nine-year-old Suleiman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, called a formal council to decide whether to launch an attack on the island of Malta and wipe out the Knights of St. John of Malta forever. They had been a thorn in his side since he rose to the throne 45 years earlier.
In 1522 Suleiman had attacked the Knights on their island home of Rhodes, and when their defeat became inevitable, he graciously allowed them to surrender and leave with many of their possessions, including their weapons.
Since then, the Knights had shown no sign of gratitude. The Emperor of Spain, an enemy of Suleiman, had given Malta to the Knights and from this base they had preyed on Turkish ships, sinking or capturing them and taking thousands of Turks as slaves.
Not everyone in Suleimans council thought the attack a good idea. But Piali Pasha, the Admiral of the Fleet, and Mustapha Pasha, the General of the Army, both supported the idea. More important, Dragut, the infamous pirate who was loyal to Suleiman, also agreed. The decision was made.
During Suleimans reign, the Ottoman Empire reached the height of its power. His realm stretched from Austria to the Persian Gulf to the shores of the Arabian Sea. To Europeans he was known as Suleiman the Conqueror; he initiated ten campaigns against the West and three others in Asia, shaking the sixteenth-century world to its core. He made Europe tremble with fear like no other Muslim had.
