Description
An Ominous Dj Vu
On the morning of Friday May 18, sentinels stationed on guard along the south-eastern shores of the island of Malta caught the first hazy glimpse of a long line of white sails spreading along the horizon.
The much-feared but long expected Ottoman armada, ordered by Suleiman the Magnificent and his council, had finally arrived.
Warning shots, fires and the eerie wail of conch shells spread the alarm across the islands. Three cannons were fired from Fort St Angelo warning village inhabitants to seek the shelter of the closest fortress.
A terrible sense of dj vu must have troubled most of the older brethren. Forty-two years earlier, the Knights had witnessed a similar armada at Rhodes. After six month of siege warfare, they were forced to surrender and leave their island home of more than 200 years, defeated by the same man who had ordered this siege. At Rhodes, they had been given ships and allowed to leave with honour, taking all their weapons and possessions with them. This time they were facing annihilation.
The fleet sailed west along the southern end of the island, and then north, following the western coastline before setting anchor for the night.
A small contingent of the Orders cavalry was sent to track their movements. The next morning, Saturday May 19, the cavalry officers watched the enormous armada from the high cliffs of Dingli, the small islet of Filfla in the distance, as hundreds of ships headed south toward the bay of Marsaxlokk.
