Artist's Description
MS Melbourne Star
Oil on Canvas
18" X 24" (45cm X 60cm)
MS Melbourne Star was part of the "Pedestal Convoy" to supply the island of Malta in WWII.
14 Merchant ships left Britain of which 5 limped into port in Malta, the rest sunk by torpedoes and bombs from Axis S-Boats, U-Boats and Aircraft.
The importance of that convoy was conveyed by its escort:
2 Battle ships, 4 Aircraft Carriers, 7 Cruisers and 20 destroyers.
This Painting shows MS Melbourne Star caught in the fires of the exploded MS Waimarama with a German Junkers JU88 fluing low and hot over the inferno.
