An Ominous D�j� Vu

On the morning of Friday May 18, sentinels stationed on guard along the south-eastern shores of the island of Malta caught the first hazy glimpse of a long line of white sails spreading along the horizon.

The much-feared but long expected Ottoman armada, ordered by Suleiman the Magnificent and his council, had finally arrived.

Warning shots, fires and the eerie wail of conch shells spread the alarm across the islands. Three cannons were fired from Fort St Angelo warning village inhabitants to seek the shelter of the closest fortress.

A terrible sense of d�j� vu must have troubled most of the older brethren. Forty-two years earlier, the Knights had witnessed a similar armada at Rhodes. After six month of siege warfare, they were forced to surrender and leave their island home of more than ���200 years, defeated by the same man who had ordered this siege. I am first and foremost a Gemini. My feet are placed precariously in several camps and constantly and easily cross over many boundaries. My working life spanned 3 decades and embraced 3 continents. Some of my time was spent in the British Royal Navy and much of it in the International Automotive Industry.
