Piali Pasha � The Sultan�s Admiral

A few days after landing at Marsaxlokk and gathering information on the Order�s forces and the layout of its defence, the Turkish leaders assembled together in council to map out a campaign strategy for the Siege.

General Mustapha Pasha recommended attacking the harbour strongholds of Birgu and St Michael and the old city of Mdina. But Piali Pasha, the admiral, thought it wiser to provide a safe anchorage for the fleet at Marsamxett, since the harbour at Marsaxlokk was vulnerable to storms. This could only be achieved by first defeating the small fort which stood at the entrance to Marsamxett harbour, Fort St Elmo. Apparently convinced by Piali, the council opted for the latter proposal.

Though younger than Mustapha, Piali was a veteran of many naval battles. At the time of the Siege, he was at the height of his powers with numerous maritime successes to his name including the great razzia of the Italia...
