9-15 August 1942 Pedestal Convoy
Military Art depicting Ms Ohio, an American Oiler, entering Grand Harbour Malta.
The World War II episode saved the country from surrender to Axis powers.
The Ohio, broken backed and supported afloat by Destroyers strapped on its flanks, limps slowly to safety as a Supermarine Warlus flying-boat keeps an eye on marauding Shnell-Boats and U boats.
Pedestal Convoy was a technical naval disaster of huge losses in men and material but a strategic victory as the supplies delivered were enough to keep the island fighting on towards victory.
Allied losses were an aircraft carrier, two light cruisers, a destroyer, 9 merchant-ships with casualties numbered between 350 and 400 killed.
Axis losses numbered 42 aircraft downed, two submarines sunk, and two cruisers damaged.
