I have not read the book, however, your expanded blog share has stirred my interest. This is a great example of emotionalism. Dare I ask, was this the book’s cover art? Powerful either way.

Ray Agius replied:

This was one of 50 portraits from my 2013 exhibition "Behold the People". The book is Immanuel's masterwork of litriture but only published in Maltese. He is dark and scarey but factual and represents the dark side of life.

I could see it and feel it through your portrait of him. You see I don't know him and yet through your painting I could see and feel his persona. Only a great artist can convey those feelings. Ray you do that!

Ray Agius replied:

You have made my day Carolyn. So good of you to compliment my work. I thank you from the heart.

you're probably too young to remember the greats on late night tv of old ... the guests on Jack Parr and early Carson and Steve Allen and even Dick Cavett ... there were such dynamic intellectual visionaries ... they had all the answers ... waving their cigarettes and railing against the times (which in retrospect, were actually pretty tame, considering!!). Your amazing portrait could easily be a compilation of all the restless angst of those amazing days. I haven't read his book or his poetry ... but in your portrait I see sooo much. Amazing, as is all your art.

Ray Agius replied:

Beautiful words Lois. I am not that young my dear but I do remember these guys from their reputation. You have the man pegged. He is a most important intellectual on the island. Thank you for your wonderful compliment Lois.

I am first and foremost a Gemini. My feet are placed precariously in several camps and constantly and easily cross over many boundaries. My working life spanned 3 decades and embraced 3 continents. Some of my time was spent in the British Royal Navy and much of it in the International Automotive Industry.
An Engineer and Designer is automatically a keen observer of life and human nature and from that I take much inspiration for my art. I do not call myself just an artist but rather a purveyor, documenter and expositor of life, from which my art bleeds and sometimes gushes forth!
My skills and qualifications have been honed over decades, influenced by both current and long dead artists., Some of those with whom I...
