Having joined the Malta relief convoy WS21S with HM Aircraft Carriers EAGLE, INDOMITABLE,
VICTORIOUS, HM Cruisers CAIRO, CHARYBDIS. PHOEBE and SIRIUS she provided escort against attacks by Italian and German submarines.
HMS EAGLE had just been sunk NE of Algiers by U23 and on the 12th the Submarine attacks in together with sustained air attacks continued in earnest.
At 4:16 HMS Pathfinder got an ASDIC contact and increasing speed to 20 knots dropped a 5 depth-charge pattern over the contact area. HMS Pathfinder and HMS Zetland combined to cover the area with depth charges damaging the Italian submarine Cobalto bringing it to the surface. Crash-diving the sub went deep but the pressure of the dive incapacitated the crew with bleeding from ears and noses.
Panic over-trimming and ballast blowing caused the submarine to break surface again momentarily.
HMS Ithuriel spotted the boat and raced to drop more charges over the repeat diving Cobalto.
This time damaged heavily and out of control, Cobalto broke surface in the wake of the destroyer as HMS Ithuriel turned tightly reversing course. With A and B turrets blazing, she raced towards the enemy and rammed the hapless submarine on the Port side at the juncture of conning tower and hull sinking it within minutes.
Sustaining major damage to bow structure as a result of the ramming attack the ship had to return to Gibraltar for repair.
