Chloe
I received an email from William on Sunday.
William is an Art Teacher but also runs the gallery I go do my life and Portrait sessions at.
Mark Panza owns Panza Gallery in Millvale Pittsburgh but Bill helps out with emails and running some sessions as well as paints himself.
The email was short and concise. Just a few words confirming the session will go ahead in spite of bad and icy weather. Then, on the sparse second line one could feel some latent excitement in the printed words. That proclaimed, with implied trumpet fanfare, that Chloe would be posing for the portraiture session on the Monday.
Curious I thought, calling a model by name and announcing it boldly and triumphantly was not something I would call normal.
So I went to the session last night and found the usual 8 Artists had inflated to 18.
Indeed the Model, Chloe, had fine qualities, sharp features, nice bone-structure and a comfortable confident poise with a prowess on making even a casual sitting look unique.
As one does before a session starts, they spread themselves around sharing some banter between friends and exchanges greetings with others not known to them. All men professed to have painted her multiple times on multiple sessions and would always take up an invitation to paint the pretty lady again. The few women Artists claimed the same except, I suspect, their motivation was more genuine.
Hmmm I thought, beautiful one might be but to be so popular was odd indeed.
During the 3 hour session I had positioned myself on the floor cross-legged, allowing the Acrylic and oil painters the easel space they required and those chair-borne a view over my head. I tend to work sitting with my Arches pad in my hand but with so many in the room one could but hope to find a comfortable place wherever one existed.
And there I could see the magic. Chloe, while in a pose, would acknowledge with imperceptible smiles and nods, individual artists whom I am sure, if male, whether married or otherwise, were quite in love with her.
During the short breaks she would hold the eyes of those chatting with her and have a ready laugh whenever required.
She would eagerly exclaim wonder and excitement at anyones painting of her, be it professional or amateurish. Most importantly she had a genuine sparkle in her eyes that showed dept and intelligence when called upon.
So it was that I sat with her, in mixed company, on the last break, sipping bad Sangria for 10 minutes. Damned if Chloe was not a citizen of the world as I was. Temporary in Pittsburgh as I am, soon to be returning to Australia as I have already done. Originally from Europe as is yours truly is just about to return to. We hurriedly exchanged details and expressed a wish to meet again but both knew it was highly unlikely.
We sort of made a vague promise to meet somewhere, sometime, somehow in the future at a place yet undetermined. Such a nuisance to meet like ships in the night when so much needs to be said.
The session nearly over her boyfriend was already at the door waiting to take her home.
I am now so annoyed I took the Portrait too lightly. Had I spoken to the lady earlier I would have electrified the eyes, put fire in the breast and heat in the neck. Unfortunately this unworthy portrait will have to suffice till we meet again.
