She kneels in front of the derelict grave. Deep in thought she tidies a few leaves off the inscription. The year on the grave said 1942. That was 7 years ago.
A torpedo was loaded on one of 3 Beauforts earmarked for a special mission. The goal to sink heavily escorted Italian ships supplying Rommel. One last desperate attempt to stop them reaching safety. They were all that was left of a now deceased squadron on the ravaged island. Flying low and slow they expected almost certain death but failure was not an option.
Some weeks before the young pilot begged her parents to allow him to marry her. She was 17 then. His aircraft returned alone. The pilot mortally wounded. She had no news for days, and then the little box came.
She lays a single flower gently next to his name. From her purse she pulls out the small box and unfolds the note. She re-reads the dedication of his eternal love and apology for missing their wedding. Tears well in her eyes as she unwraps the tissue and feels the wedding ring that she will never get to wear. A tear runs down her face and beads at her chin. She bows her head in prayer and the tear drops heavily to stain the dusty ledger stone.
Most of the graves lie unkempt. The buried have been forgotten with the passage of time. But not him, he will never be forgotten while she is alive. Tears started to flow freely.
