The battle for the little island of Malta war reaching a crescendo.
The Pedestal Convoy with 13 Merchantmen and a tanker moved slowly eastwards.
The night hid dangers of its own and half an hour after midnight the enemy struck with talent and discipline.
Exchanging vicious fire with the Italian Motor Torpedo Boat (Motoscafo Anti-Silurante) Mas.557 slicing past her, spraying her decks with fire, she managed to hit the intruder causing its torpedo to overshoot.
Mas564 struck Santa Eliza on her starboard side abreast No 1 hold with a torpedo.
The Aviation fuel on board exploded and the ship was doomed from the outset.
The ship, ablaze from end to end sank slowly, her crew, 5 of them burnt, surviving the ordeal.
Such are the wages when the dogs of war are unleashed.
