Description
Return of the Sea Wolf - Dragut
At dawn on Saturday, June 2, a fleet appeared on the horizon and sailed slowly toward Grand Harbour. For a brief moment, the Christian defenders inside Fort St Elmo and Birgu hoped that a relief force had finally arrived. But anticipation turned to dread when they realized that the vessels belonged to Dragut (Turgut Reis).
The most experienced and most feared of the Barbary corsairs, Dragut had trained under the infamous Barbarossa and had raided the Maltese islands six times in the previous two decades. Even at the age of eighty, Dragut could instil terror in his enemies.
It was the Sultan himself who insisted that Dragut participate in directing the Siege operations, and he ordered his general, Mustapha Pasha, and his admiral, Piali Pasha, to consult Dragut before beginning.
Suleiman was aware of the possibility of friction between the two and he also knew that Dragut would be crucial in developing a successful strategy. Draguts experience in siege warfare, his knowledge of the Maltese islands, and his experience battling the Knights were unmatched in the Turkish camp. In addition to his many raids of the islands, he had captured the Knights fortress of Tripoli and had become extremely rich and powerful.
Once in Malta, Dragut was annoyed to discover that the barrage of Fort St Elmo had already begun. But he set to work, made suggestions for better execution of the attack, and began constructing his own gun platform. His plans would eventually destroy the fort, but he wouldnt live to see it.
