Chiara Part 1 of 2
She reached down to the hem of her dress and pulled it up, stripping it off her body. It was her and the monster now. Just them. No one else but them.
Neatly arranging the dress on one of the few wire hangers she had managed to find in the apartment she then hung it on one of protruding nails hammered into the wall next to the one frying pan she owned.
Sighing, she sat on the air-mattress she used as her bed and counted out her remaining Euros.
When Chiara had come to the city in the warm spring, this place hadnt looked so bad. But now, autumn was chilling the air around her.
At least it was cheap living in this less-desirable suburb of Rome with the monster, she thought. She lived upstairs in the un-insulated, barely furnished apartment; he, downstairs on a dirt floor without furniture of any kind except the tool box.
Things were different for her before coming to the city, but country life was too slow for the dreams of a budding fashion designer. Her designs had won prizes at school and the local shops often carried her one-of-a-kind, imaginative outfits. But none of her letters to every fashion house in Italy had ever been answered. So her dreams of an exciting future in Rome meant leaving all she loved and all who loved her for the tantalising promises of that one shot in the big city.
In this cold, dark place, where any nightly excursion was an adventure in survival, her dreams and her money were evaporating. The fees to attend the Academy of Art and Design had been high, and the promised contacts and career possibilities in the brochures turned out to be non-existent. No design houses came to the Academy looking for future designers. There were no promised opportunities to mix with buyers, stylists, fashion houses, wholesalers, retail stores, manufacturers, suppliers, or anyone remotely connected with the fashion industry.
Now, six months later, it was obvious that she had been fooled into paying up-front for a course leading to no formal qualification or work.
With a small electric heater providing some solace from the damp, she snuck under the sheets and stacked her coat and jacket on top of the thin blanket to capture what little warmth she was able to generate with her body.
She thought of Mark, the American student who befriended her when she first came but had since lost interest. Now, he ignored her to sleep with the tall Ukrainian girl who couldnt thread a needle much less sew a dress. The long-haired blond didnt have an original idea in her. Chiara recognized all her designs as thinly disguised rehashes from last years fashion magazines.
But blond Eva was enough to take Mark away.
How fickle boys are, she thought
He thinks hes so smart, so experienced, so talentedbut he fell for the same glossy brochure promises I did. And for stupid Eva! Still, it would be nice to have him to hold on nights like this. You could forget your worries and talk about runway shows and photo shoots, and rich, glamorous clients, and then make love before falling asleep or fully waking up.
She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
