Description
A Time to Die Fighting
Two days after the fall of the St Elmo, Grand Master de Valette and the rest of the defenders were still traumatized. They had sacrificed a large part of their army holding on to St Elmo, in an attempt to keep the harbour open for promised reinforcements from Sicily. But help never arrived.
That afternoon, a large party of Turks appeared, bearing a flag of truce and a slave was brought to the Grand Master bearing a message. Mustapha Pasha requested an audience, giving the Grand Master an opportunity to surrender and leave the island with dignity as they had done in Rhodes.
The thought of giving up must have crossed the minds of many but only one man dared voice this thought. De Valette had him quickly arrested and executed.
At seventy years of age, the Grand Master was feeling the toll of this massive siege. But he knew that the final result of this battle would affect not only the future of the Order but also the fate of Christian Europe.
De Valette had joined the Order at age 20 and quickly rose within its ranks. Eventually he was recognized as one of the greatest Christian commanders of his time. He knew hardship; he had been captured and served as a galley slave for two years and had lived through the humiliation of the Orders defeat in Rhodes. But this time, he would not allow history to repeat itself. Surrender was not an option. If need be, he would die fighting alongside his knights.
